Kathryn Gougelet

Kathryn Gougelet is a PhD candidate in cultural anthropology at UC Santa Cruz. As a CCCR Fellow, she is working with Professor Andrew Mathews to develop ArcGIS Story Maps that illustrate the ways in which fire — intensified by climate change — re-activates longer histories of industrial and settler colonial land-use patterns across Santa Cruz County. In building Story Maps as a CCCR Fellow, she builds on her dissertation research as a medical and environmental anthropologist studying the effects of petrochemical pollution on human and environmental health in Spain and the United States. Prior to her PhD, she was a Rachel Carson Scholar in research translation at the University of Arizona, where she received her MFA in creative writing.
