Digital Artist Talk — LABSCAPES: DIORAMAS OF RESEARCH

Join us for this digital media showcase and Adobe Photoshop demo with artist Saul Villegas. This event highlights Villegas’s work as Artist in Residence at the Center for Coastal Climate Resilience (CCCR) and the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS). The showcase presents photography, video, and experimental digital media that document research environments, fieldwork, and laboratory processes as immersive visual dioramas.

The session concludes with an open Q&A and informal discussion. The event is sponsored by the University Library Center for Digital Scholarship, the CCCR, and the IMS. Saul’s digital exhibit will be on display on the VizWall in the Digital Scholarship Commons for the duration of Winter Quarter 2026.

Science in the Neighborhood” with Mike Beck

Coastal risks are growing from climate change, development and habitat loss.  The Center for Coastal Climate Resilience assesses coastal risks, values the adaptation benefits of nature, and identifies innovative solutions to reduce risks to people, property and nature.  Mike will describe recent successes in bridging ecology, engineering and economics to develop solutions in the interface between science, policy and finance.

Mike will show some of the latest innovations with examples from Santa Cruz and across the US and internationally. These successes include new policies that open funding for nature as natural infrastructure; the development of nature-positive insurance; and the use of game engine technology to communicate the cost effectiveness of nature-based solutions.

Date: Thursday, February 5, 2026
Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Location: La Feliz Room, Seymour Marine Discovery Center
